BARNET GROVE
Set within a typical Victorian terraced house, Barnet Grove approaches the transformation of the home as a process of careful adaptation rather than replacement. The design works within the existing fabric, shaped by overlapping constraints including planning requirements, budget, sustainability ambitions and construction realities.

Along the side return, the project focuses on shaping daylight. An initial proposal for a continuous rooflight was revised during the design process into a series of smaller openings, responding to concerns around overlooking and security. Within this constraint, the geometry was refined to maximise the quality of light entering the space. Chamfered reveals were introduced, establishing a rhythm along the roofline and allowing daylight to spread more evenly into the interior while softening contrast and limiting direct views from neighbouring properties.
The project develops through a series of incremental decisions rather than a single formal gesture. Subtle adjustments in section, material and detail give the house a distinct character, balancing performance, buildability and cost. Materials are selected pragmatically: breathable, low-impact elements such as wood fibre insulation and lime plaster are used alongside more conventional systems where required.
Working within the existing roof volume, additional accommodation is achieved through reconfiguring the section rather than extending the footprint. A stepped platform and small dormer redistribute height at upper levels, allowing spaces to interlock across floors and enabling a compact four-bedroom arrangement.
Barnet Grove is defined by these careful, considered moves, an accumulation of small decisions that collectively reshape the house, enhancing light, space and everyday use while retaining the character of the original building.
